An Indian footballer died Sunday of spinal injuries he sustained as he attempted a celebratory somerasult, emulating Miroslav Klose, in a match last week.

Peter Biaksangzuala, who was injured when he landed awkwardly on his neck after scoring for Bethlehem Vengthlang against Chanmari West in the northeast Indian state of Mirozam last Tuesday, had been hospitalized since undergoing surgery.

“It has been a sad day for Mizoram football and the demise of the footballer shook his team-mates, footballers and fans alike all over Mizoram,” his club said in a statement. “Peter was a defensive midfielder who had always been aggressive and hard working, a true team player. Like most defensive midfielders, he was excellent at reading the game, breaking up attacks and protecting his defenders.

Biaksangzuala was a 23-year-old midfielder and his No. 21 will be retired by the team.

“Peter was a lad with good manner who always maintained his discipline on and off the pitch,” his coach, Danny Lalduhawma, said (via the Independent). “I don’t think there are many like him.”
